Yes Equals Yes! The Art of Creating Agreement
Nowadays, getting a yes out of anyone is met with some type of skepticism—and rightfully so. With all the scam artists that have plagued humanity this century, it’s no wonder people are bound to say “No” before saying “Yes.”
I learned pretty early in life that a “maybe” is way better than a hard “No.” Growing up in an environment where my mom was a hardworking single parent, “No” rolled off her tongue faster than a smile. Whenever I wanted to boost my chances of getting a yes, I was sure to create what I would call a yes environment.
Creating the Yes Environment
Making sure the dishes were done, clothing put away, even setting time aside to have a hot beverage for her to drink—these weren’t just chores. They were investments in creating the right atmosphere.
As she enjoyed her tea, I would swoop in and ask her, “Is there anything else you would like me to do?” I knew that for the most part, I’d taken the time to hit every corner of the house, ensuring complete satisfaction.
Then I would ask her if she enjoyed her tea, leading to my first YES!
Right after, I would ask her if she was pleased with the work I took upon myself to do, and I received my second YES.
Right after that, I would present my question. What response do you think I got? Right—you guessed it—a resounding YES!
The Power of Timing and Service
Now, do you believe I would have gotten a yes out of her if I had run into her room with all my requests first thing in the morning after my mom had been working so hard the day before? I would’ve been met with a big fat NO!
The next time you would like to ask someone for something—whether it be for you or your business—try to take some time out and see how you can be helpful first. More than likely, you will get what you wanted without even asking. People love to help, so why not be the first to give?
Remember: Yes equals Yes when you create the environment for it to flourish.
