Reclaiming Your Inner Goddess in Your Silver Years

Reclaiming Your Inner Goddess in Your Silver Years

There’s something magical about stepping into your 50s and beyond—a time when you start reclaiming who you truly are, unapologetically. This is the era of the inner goddess, where self-love isn’t just a concept but a daily practice. It’s about loving the skin you’re in and celebrating every curve, every line, and every story your body tells.

Fashion That Honors Your Body

This October, I’ve been reflecting on how my style has evolved. Now in my 50s, I’ve realized certain trends no longer resonate with me—short shorts and mini skirts have taken a backseat, not because of age, but because my vibe has shifted. This fall, I’m embracing dresses and pencil skirts.

Can we talk about pencil skirts? They’re absolutely sexy! I love how they hug the hips and celebrate a woman’s shape, especially if you’re more pear-shaped like myself. At 5’8″, a pencil skirt has always been flattering on me. It’s an oldie but goodie that I wore constantly when I worked a physical job, and I’m bringing it back into rotation.

The Art of Pre-Loved Treasures

Fall is the perfect time to incorporate a trench coat, and thrift stores or eBay allow you to invest in quality pieces without dropping major coin. I recently scored a gorgeous lined trench on eBay—warm, chic, and with a removable liner. I wasn’t ready to spend a fortune but wanted something well-made. When you’re a tall girly like myself, quality matters!

Pre-loved always hits for me. Is it just me, or has new fashion been underwhelming lately? There’s something special about vintage pieces that modern fast fashion just can’t replicate.

Bringing Warmth Back to Your Skin

In your mid-40s, 50s, and 60s, you want to bring out the undertones in your skin. As we age, skin can become a little dull, so bringing forth those undertones helps restore warmth and radiance.

This brings me to skincare—make sure you’re getting enough sunlight to accumulate and retain vitamin D (of course, wear sunscreen!). Going out in nature and enjoying the sensation of the sun helps tremendously, especially if you live in the northern hemisphere where sunlight can be scarce. As soon as the sun comes out, we’re all running outside!

I’m looking forward to the leaves changing colors—what a sight! Nature is healing for the soul, so make it a point to get outside. If you want to turn back the hands of time, allow nature to heal you. Going for walks has been known to build million-dollar businesses—just saying! Not to mention, it heals the nervous system.

Turbans & Head Wraps: Elevated Style

I love a good turban! Last fall, this became the center of my personal style—it’s warm, chic, and a simple yet elevated way to add spice to any outfit. I’ve written a whole article about it, so be sure to check it out.

If you’re not into turbans, head wraps might be just the thing for you. They come in so many colors and are an easy way to turn a bad hair day into a chic statement. As an African-American woman, when my hair is between styles, head wraps allow for versatility. I’ve invested in a whole bunch of them!

Whenever I adorn my hair—whether with a head wrap, turban, or any other accessory—my style feels elevated. Knowing that my hair is protected gives me a yummy feeling inside! Protecting your hair from the elements is a must if you want to maintain healthy, thriving hair, especially when grays are coming in, which can leave hair feeling brittle and dry. Kinky curly hair tends to attract everything under the sun, so you want to protect the hair you’ve worked so hard to maintain. Deep conditioning and moisturizing—doing all the things—helps as well.

This fall is the season of head wraps, girl!

The Magic Duo: Shea Butter & Black Soap

Last but not least—skincare. What I’m about to share is probably something you already have in your repertoire or are familiar with: Shea butter. Hear me out! Shea butter, hands down, has been a lifesaver. Let me tell you, Shea butter and Black soap have been game-changers for me, especially in these cooler months.

Not only has this combination brought moisture back to my skin, but it’s also helped with evening out my complexion. I call it the magic duo! I cannot tell you the miracles—the voodoo—this combination has done for my skin.

I haven’t used Black soap in years—shame on me! My skin started looking a little dull, which I believe menopause had a lot to do with. Let’s face it, age changes the skin. I’m in my 50s now, so I can’t expect my skin to look like it did in my 20s. The good news? I can do the work!

When you look your best, you feel your best. Your makeup isn’t going to look good if your skin isn’t healthy—that’s a fact. Clinique is a good option as well, being hypoallergenic and catering to various skin types. Do your research—there’s a slew of other brands that can help you on your skin journey.

Love the Skin You’re In

This season is about reclaiming your power, your beauty, and your inner goddess. It’s about celebrating the woman you’ve become and loving every inch of the skin you’re in. These silver years are your time to shine brighter than ever.

Cheers to you and your journey!

Hugs, Elizabeth
