Self-Care or Your Worth It? The Mirror Doesn’t Lie

Self-Care or Your Worth It? The Mirror Doesn’t Lie

Many people are opposed to looking at themselves in the mirror when it comes to seeing their natural beauty. I believe this stems from something deeper.

The Science Behind Mirror Avoidance

Studies have shown that due to low self-esteem, many people are uncomfortable with looking at themselves in the mirror. This is usually the case for someone who has dealt with some form of trauma. I myself was very uncomfortable with staring at myself in the mirror for quite some time.

There has been a large percentage of people in the modeling industry who have suffered from low self-esteem—it’s hard to imagine, but true. It’s kind of up there with the girl who’s deemed the prettiest girl in the school but never has a date. In many cases, when you speak to this young woman, they didn’t see themselves the way others saw them.

How We View Ourselves Matters

This stems from many reasons. How we view ourselves, people pick up on. Studies show that if you think poorly of yourself, nine times out of ten, others will too.

The Solution: Mirror Work and Affirmations

So how can this be done? One of the things that helped me was spending time looking in the mirror while saying positive affirmations. This not only boosts morale, but it also rewires the brain, creating a new framework when it comes to how one perceives their self.

You can do it in the mornings or at night—it’s up to you. I find the morning helps as an added boost to the ego, helping to ensure a healthy mindset during the course of the day.

You Are the Star of Your Show

How you feel matters. Remember, you are the star of your show. Your worth isn’t determined by what you see in the mirror on a bad day—it’s determined by the love and care you give yourself every single day.

Hugs,

Elizabeth
