Dig Yourself Out: A New Path Is Ahead
Whenever I think about new beginnings, I think about a new home, a new neighborhood, a fresh start — that feeling of stepping into a brand-new version of life.
And honestly, I’ve always loved that feeling.
Even as a young girl, especially when I was going back to school, I would imagine becoming someone new. A new character. A new personality. A new version of myself who walked differently, spoke differently, and showed up in the world differently.
There was something exciting about it.
It amazed me how quickly people would believe in the version of me I decided to present. If I acted confident, people responded to confidence. If I acted like I had everything together, people treated me like I did. If I played a part long enough, it started to feel real.
But light-years later, I had to ask myself a hard question:
At what point did those characters stop being pretend?
At what point did they become part of my life?
How many versions of myself did I create just to be liked, loved, accepted, or seen as smart?
And maybe that’s a question many of us need to ask.
Why is it so difficult to be ourselves?
Why does it feel so hard to show up as the person God actually created us to be?
I believe many of us are taught early — directly or indirectly — that being ourselves is not enough. We learn how to perform. We learn how to smile when we’re tired. We learn how to say “I’m fine” when we are anything but fine.
People ask, “How was your day?”
But sometimes, they don’t really want the truth.
So we put on the costume.
We play the role.
We try to become the version of ourselves we think people will approve of. The easy one. The impressive one. The strong one. The one who doesn’t need too much, feel too much, or say too much.
But here’s the thing:
When does it end?
When do we finally decide that the only person we truly need to impress is ourselves?
Because until you get to a place where the number-one character in your life is you, life will never feel fully fulfilling. And how exhausting is that — to live every day performing for people who may not even know the real you?
It took me decades to understand this.
But when I did?
Man, oh man — the world opened up.
There is a freedom that comes when you stop auditioning for love. There is peace that comes when you stop shrinking, pretending, and proving. There is power in finally saying:
This is me. This is who I am. This is who God created me to be.
And I believe you can have that feeling too.
One thing that helps is taking a few quiet minutes every morning. Close your eyes. Sit in silence. Breathe. Remind yourself:
- I am here.*
- I matter.*
- I do not have to perform in this moment.*
- I do not have to impress anyone right now.*
I am allowed to simply be.
Sometimes something as small as a few minutes of stillness can begin to change everything.
Remind yourself that you are a queen. Remind yourself that you are worthy. Remind yourself that you do not have to dig yourself into somebody else’s idea of who you should be.
You can dig yourself out.
Out of the pretending.
Out of the people-pleasing.
Out of the old characters.
Out of the belief that you are not enough.
Because God created you to win at life.
So if you are going to play any character, let it be the truest one:
You.
Embrace who God intended you to be.
A winner.
Hugs,
Elizabeth
