Mean What You Say and Say What You Do

Mean What You Say and Say What You Do

Hey there, welcome to today’s post!

Hi, I’m Elizabeth. You may know me from Elizabeth Magical Garden on YouTube or from my podcast, Elizabeth Magical Garden Podcast—also on YouTube.

words of love

This morning, I was reading poetry from Maya Angelou, something I’ve grown accustomed to lately, alongside a stiff black cup of coffee. I know, so NYC—but hey, that’s me!

In today’s poem, Maya Angelou discusses how words on paper are well received, but it’s the words that come out of a person’s mouth that truly bring them to life. It struck me—not because I wasn’t aware of it, but because of how profoundly true it is.

For years, I’ve personally felt this way. So much so that I would get on the nerves of close friends when they’d blurt something out. I would say in a loud but loving voice: “DON’T SAY THAT! YOUR WORDS ARE POWERFUL!”

Sometimes I’d get a thank you. Other times… well, not so much.

The Power of Words

I believe 99% of the time, most conflicts could be avoided if only we would pay attention to our words—something I explore further in my free evening reflection meditations. Click the link if you’re ready to start changing your word patterns!

Whenever we take time to think before we speak, we not only get to correct what’s coming out of our mouths—we also save ourselves the frustration of having to clean up what I call “the word mess on aisle 5,” lol.

Doing this will lead you to become a person who means what they say, without the guilt of having to explain yourself to others. Why? Because you are fully aware of the words that have come out of your mouth.

This builds confidence and respect for yourself, as well as others.

A Poem from Maya Angelou

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.” — Maya Angelou

Scripture from the Bible

Matthew 12:36-37 (NIV) “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Remember This

Before you start to use words that may not paint you in your best light, remember the power they hold.

You, my friend, have the power to paint any picture you want through your words.

Hugs, Elizabeth
